Winemaker Notes: SIRS Training

We have completed our owner training for the Serve It Right Saskatchewan. As the website says: “Serve It Right Saskatchewan (SIRS) provides consistent training for the sale and service of alcohol, helping commercial permittees and their employees to ensure that alcohol-related activities are conducted with integrity and in a socially responsible manner.”

Serve It Right has a 319 page online manual/course, with several instructional videos.

The SIRS course includes:

  • ways to identify intoxication

  • handling situations involving minors

  • effective approaches to discontinue or refuse to sell or serve alcohol

  • understanding your legal responsibilities and liabilities

I personally found the course very informative and relatively user-friendly to take. If a person has a difficult time with self-study format, the course is also offered in a classroom setting over a single day period with the test at the end. The test wasn’t difficult, but it did assess if you mastered the required key points. For me, some of the key and informative sections included tactful ways to handle situations that are likely to arise, and the legal implications of your action or inaction.

I think this course would be a valuable tool for anyone, liquor server or not!
